Sleep apnea: Sleep apnea is a treatable disorder in which a person stops breathing during sleep, often hundreds of times during the night. Sleep apnea is a common disorder that affects millions of men, women and children, but is often undiagnosed. It is estimated that at least ten million Indians have unrecognized sleep apnea.
'Apnea' is clinically defined in adults as cessation of airflow that lasts for more than ten seconds, Some times 'Hypopnea' with reduction in airflow may also occur, wherein the oxygen level in blood stream typically drops.
Obstructive sleep apnea is most common type of sleep apnea. Usually, the soft tissue in the rear of the throat collapses and closes the airway so that sufferers of sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during the sleep, as frequently as a hundred times an hour and often for a minute longer.
Consequences of untreated sleep apnea include high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases. People with untreated sleep apnea may also complain of falling asleep inappropriately, morning headaches, memory problems, feeling of depression, reflux, frequent urination in night and impotence. A person with untreated sleep apnea has more chance to face motor vehicle accidents.
Risk factors for sleep apnea include obesity, a large neck, a recessed chin and abnormalities in the structure of upper airway, ethnicity, smoking and alcohol use.

Bariatric Surgery (Weight Reduction Surgery)
Bariatric surgery (commonly known as weight reduction surgery) includes various kinds of procedures to achieve weight loss in patients who are extremely obese. When a person is severely obese and unable to lose weight through traditional methods like diet and exercise, then a long-term weight loss surgery can be used as an alternative method to lose weight.
The surgery works around the principle of reducing the size of the stomach to hold lesser amount of food than the typically sized stomach, thereby helping restricting the amount of food intake. It is performed as laparoscopic procedure. Laparoscopic surgery is a technique where a camera (laparoscope) is placed in the abdomen through a small incision for vision and the surgical procedure is done using a delicate instrument.
Who can have Bariatric Surgery?- A person has a BMI (Body Mass Index) greater than 35 who is above 18 years of age.

Trauma Booths to save lives on the road
National Highways occupy the central stage as far as road traffic accidents are concerned as they contribute vastly to the number of accident deaths and disabilities per year. The major proportion of deaths and organ deformities due to road traffic accidents occur mainly due to the lack of specialist first aid care at the spot of accident. In order to tackle this, Medical Trust Hospital, Cochin and Rotary International have combined their efforts to come up with the idea of setting up of Trauma Care Booths all along the national highway. Spots with the maximum rate of accidents were chosen as venues for the accident booths (Kalamassery, Aluva, & Irumbanam)
These booths have been setup with the aim of providing emergency trauma care round the clock. They are staffed by specially trained paramedical personnel and having an ambulance at the service for 24 hours. Besides this, a mobile intensive ambulance chain is ready to tackle any emergency situation. The Trauma Booths could be contacted using a mobile line at any time in case of any emergency situation. When an accident occurs, the ambulance team from the nearest booth rushes to the spot and after providing the first aid care, if necessary, the victim will be transferred to the nearest hospital for further treatment.
